Sora : Heartwood.
Lushly evocative songstress singing music for a new world.
With its uniquely
ancient to modern sound, Sora's music weaves together contemporary rock with the
mystical moods of Celtic folk, medieval madrigals, and other modes of early
music. The result is a heady, colorfully evocative tapestry that conjures the
imagery of long ago but feels just as current as anything from the present
musical landscape all the while sounding like little else on today's airwaves.
Across the album's moody and atmospheric tracks Sora's heartrending soprano
glides like a graceful dove through swirling mists of violin, piano, harp,
synthesizer, cello, guitar, percussion, and other instruments to deliver
sweeping performances. The music moves from lightness of thought and sound to
richly dense soundscapes. The music is not easy to categorize, but ultimately it
is about the journeys we make within ourselves.
It feels at times as if music comes not so much from within me but that is
passes through me in the ways of half-remembered dreams. Yet, I feel we each are
a filter to the heart of the world, we shape it, to some extent with our own
experiences, perceptions and feelings. I like to think of each of these songs as
filtered through my own heart, as water passes through a teabag, colored with
the pieces of me. The music itself washes through me, as wind passes through the
trees, but in doing so is imprinted by my spirit as it exits through my voice,
my fingers, through the notes that I write. The songs are not about me, but I
cannot deny that I find myself in them.
It is my belief that we are influenced by the environments in which we live. The
outer world interacts with the inner, affecting thought patters, creation and
consciousness. Found within the pages here are objects from my environment; that
which creates the spaces I inhabit musically, emotionally, spiritually and
physically. Leaves, petals, rocks, crystal; these are the heartgifts I wish to
share with you.
Heartwood is the core, it is the truths we carry, it is the place of secret
whisperings, it is our beginnings and endings. It is the axis upon which our
lives spin. It is my most humble hope that perhaps as these songs pass through
you, that you will find something of yourself within them as well.
Heartwood is an examination of the places the heart inhabits.
