Antonio Vivaldi's (1678-1741) distinctive style was characterized by the ability to shape his harmonic sequences and expressive melodies with infinite variety. His three-part (fast-slow fast) concertos are known for their vitality, color, quick rhythms and syncopation in the fast (allegro) movements, separated by a slow (largo) lyrical movement.

Vivaldi infused his concertos (over 500) with constant variation and a certain amount of unpredictability. Even though many of his works sound naturally symmetrical, he often plays with phrase lengths and frequently confounds our expectations. The celebrated wisecrack that Vivaldi wrote the same concerto hundreds of times (attributed to Dallapiccola and repeated by Stravinsky) is humorous, but few people find it believable today. The idea is true only in the most superficial sense and ignores the considerable invention of his work.
